Finding What I Can Control and Updating My Mission Statement

It is hard to communicate right now without somehow bringing up the dreaded coronavirus disease. I've had my own small freak out as the walls felt like they were closing in. I've decided that voluntary social distancing is very different than this mandatory kind. Though my life has not been drastically impacted nor my habits greatly changed, it feels heavy.

My response has been to turn inward.

I began to contemplate the year so far. Three months have already brought about great shifts in my life. My father-in-law passed in January. We went on a two week trip to visit friends and family on the opposite coast at the beginning of February. We moved at the end of February into an RV. I had gum surgery at the beginning of March. Now, we are only in mid-March and COVID-19 closes down the country.

It's been a heck of a year.

After a deep breathe, I focus on what I can control and where I want to go from here.

With all of these transitions, I have not been very active in my business this year. I keep waiting for the moment when I can catch my breath and begin to move forward.

I'm deciding that magical place of calm is not going to happen on its own. I have to develop my own calm and make my momentum happen.

The one thing I can control is my mind.

I've been struggling with anxiety this week. It is not hard to imagine why when every email I open has another set of closings and precautions connected to the coronavirus.

My mind wants to travel to a place of fear. Instead, I encourage my mind to live in a place of growth and opportunity.

I've been wanting to sit down and reevaluate my business plan. This time of solitude has allowed me the perfect opportunity.

I evaluated my mission statement for Balancing Tree Press and realized it was lacking. I have already outgrown the words from last year outlining my intentions.

As I have begun to connect with writers, I realize what I have to offer is unique. I am both an author and a publisher. I have experience to pull from as a writer, but also in the process it takes to release and market a book. I want to build my platform on that strength.

I want to represent this in my mission statement and offer myself as a guide. My goal is to coach and encourage writers, but how am I going to do that?

I believe that publishing is about a lot more than printing a book. I also believe that writing is a lot more than putting words on a page. What I really want to offer is connection. I want to be a pillar of support and resource for writers as you seek your own creative path.

In the spirit of this recognition, I have updated my mission statement for Balancing Tree Press as follows:

To energize writers, interpret the writing process and offer insight regarding composition, publication and marketing.

With this amended mission statement, I enthusiastically ask...

What are you working on? Can I help you?

Let's beat the sense of isolation surrounding us right now and connect over something we love. I offer a $20 one-on-one writing session where we can discuss your particular project.

I would love to work with you! Email me: amanda (at) balancingtreepress (dot) com

Create the Life You Want

The past couple of weeks have been crazy and hectic. If you have ever moved, then you understand.

My family has decided to make a big change. We have moved into an RV with the intention to explore this beautiful world we live in. We want to spend more time creating, see new places and spend more time in nature. Our RV, which we have dubbed our "Moving Castle," is the vehicle we will use to create our own path and seek our desires of the heart.

Even though it feels a little crazy - we are doing this! I am excited about where our choice will lead. I look forward to new connections and exploring the places we always talk about seeing. Now we can make our dreams a reality.

What have you been talking about doing but haven't done? Do you have a dream that feels "crazy" or too big? I encourage you to look at it again. Take a new perspective and find out what about it you find so fascinating. How can you take small steps to make it happen? How can you change something in your everyday routine to feel a little closer to your dream?

The solution doesn't have to mean putting all of your belongings into a 31' motorhome. Though it could. It worked for us. It can be as easy as planning a weekly outing to a coffee shop to write. You can go for a walk and breath in the almost spring air. You can take a few minutes to yourself in the morning to really enjoy your cup of coffee. You can stop being so hard on yourself for not getting everything done that you "should." (I'm still working on that one myself.)

There are lots of big and small ways to create the life you want. The point is to be clear on what you want and then find small ways you can make it a reality.

Hi from our new home, "Fam's Moving Castle"
