Believe in Yourself to Succeed

“Your chances of success in any undertaking can always be measured by your belief in yourself.” - Robert Collier

I’ve been a writer most of my life. I was always the kid with my nose in a book or a pen in my hand. I went on to write for a newspaper and a magazine in college. However, my dream was to write a fiction book.

I started one when my daughter was small. I got pretty far in it, but a deleted file discouraged me from the task.

We moved to Seattle from the Carolinas a few years after that and I started a new story. Then, I started another one.

I could never finish.

I didn’t understand why I was so blocked. I knew how to organize, write and edit. Yet, when it came to this dream that I wanted so badly, I couldn’t quite make it happen.

Fast forward a couple years. I was working on a new project, one that really had me excited. The story came from a trip to Las Vegas with my friend. I already had three-fourths of the story written, all I needed was an ending.

I felt the resistance. All I could think was, “no, this time will be different.”

That meant I needed to try something different.

I sought help through both a therapist and a writing coach. Between the two I realized something I hadn’t before. I never believed I would be able to publish my book.

No wonder I was having so many struggles.

I feared my story being received poorly. I feared having too many mistakes. I feared that I would be seen as a fraud. I didn’t truly believe I could write a good book.

It took about a year of practice towards a different mindset to shift my perspective.

Affirmations were a big part of that for me. Everyday I told myself “I am strong. I am capable. I am loved. I am enough.”

I began to learn how to face my doubts and do the work anyway.

I finally focused my way through the resistance and finished the book. I published “Leap of Faith” last December.

I accomplished my dream because I processed through my emotional resistance and finally began to believe in myself. I celebrated my victory and took the lesson to heart.

You can only succeed when you believe you can. When you believe in yourself, anything is possible. Confidence and trust are two important tools to accomplish your creative desires.

Say it - “I am confident in my ability to succeed. I trust that through hard work and persistence, I will accomplish my dream.”

Believe it. Yes you can.
